Arthur / 2015 Last Thoughts
This is probably 2015's last post, so here's a fun summary 'firsts' this year that am honestly so so grateful for:
- I worked at Lifestyle Asia for four months and honestly learned so much. It was my first time really being in the media industry. Because of my job there, I got to attend Hong Kong Fashion Week and lots of other fashion events in town, where I met so many people. One of them being Helena, whom I was so honored to be able to shoot with later on. It was also my first time understanding the politics that goes on in this industry and how cut-throat some people can be. I guess this really motivated me to start Rhea; I want my magazine to counter these industry negatives and be as inclusive as possible.
- I did my first shoot in New York. Major Models was super nice to me, and honestly I owe them so much. After all, they gave me my first international modeling agency gig. Coincidentally, it was also NYFW Mens, and I was super lucky to be able to attend it too. Watching all the bloggers, editors and paparazzi in Skylight Square obviously made me really nervous, but it also sparked my interest in really pursuing a career in media - not just photography, but media.
- I shot with Elite London for the first time in July. This is probably the most important achievement this year, and I just can't be more thankful for it. Those who follow me on social media and have seen this post will know how much I love Elite. Elite gave me my first time shooting with an agency guy, which is something I've always wanted to do to build my portfolio. The whole process also had me knocking on different agency doors in London and pumping up my courage to meet lots of new people. I just can't say enough! This was definitely a chapter that shut down lots of fears I had in me, and propelled me forward to keep growing my brand and book.
- Last but not least, (how can I not mention this) I started my own magazine, Rhea. After contemplating and debating about it, I finally took the plunge in October and officially launched my idea of a premium fashion magazine that's distributed for free. Consequently, I formed my own company, BCHK Media Group, and it's just been a whirlwind roller coaster ride since then. Everything has been going by so quickly. I've done dozens of interviews and meetings, been to numerous events for networking and learning (because I'm a newbie), and have overcome so many of my own fears. I can't wait to show you what I've got planned. Right now, we're aiming for our first print edition to roll out in Q2 of 2016, and already I've had so much support and encouragement.
And I guess the take home message is (I always have one, don't I?): work hard for your dreams, and your dreams will come true. I don't know how to put it exactly, but essentially I guess I'm saying what Nike preaches, Just Do It. I'm so grateful for everyone who has helped and supported me on my journey and I can't wait to show you more. I'm also really proud of myself for committing to my ideas and actually going for it. (Hey, I don't want to sound cocky but 2015 was a heck of a cool year for me ok?) I used to be really scared of everything and have been searching for someone (an idol, maybe?) who could lead me in the right direction. But since I haven't found one, I became my own leader.
2016: come at me.
Thank you Arthur for letting me shoot with you in the cold!
